It’s hard to believe, but this is happening. Well-known individuals like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak (Co-founder, Apple) along with thousands of researchers from all over the world, signed an open letter asking to stop training AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 as it poses a great threat to humanity and wants to take a break to think more carefully.

As per the open letter, AI (artificial intelligence) systems that are as smart as humans can be very dangerous to people and society. Many studies have shown this, and top AI labs agree. The Asilomar AI Principles say that this kind of AI could change the world in a big way, so we need to be careful and plan for it carefully.

Unfortunately, this isn’t happening. Tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft are in a competition to make the smartest AI, and they’re making them so advanced that no one can fully understand them or control them. This is a big problem because AI researchers or even the creator don’t know what these AI systems are capable of or how they might harm us in the future.

“We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4”

“Therefore, we call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.”

This open letter has not made any significant effect on the AI labs yet, but the opposition is increasing in numbers day by day. Below, listed are some of the profound personalities who want to protect humanity and signed the open letter:

  • Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla & Twitter
  • Steve Wozniak, Co-founder, Apple
  • Yuval Noah Harari, Author and Professor, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
  • Yoshua Bengio, Founder and Scientific Director at Mila, Turing Prize winner and professor at the University of Montreal
  • Stuart Russell, Berkeley, Professor of Computer Science, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems

On a personal note, if we continue training AI systems at this pace, then it is not we who will adapt to AI. Instead, AI will adapt to us to become so advanced to replace humans.
