Over the past several months, artificial intelligence (AI) has taken centre stage in the technology industry, thanks in part to OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT, which has propelled AI into the mainstream discourse. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has even hailed ChatGPT as the most groundbreaking technology in approximately four decades. But it has been now been banned in Italy over privacy concerns.
Why Italy got ChatGPT banned?
The creator of ChatGPT, i.e. OpenAI, has been accused by Italy’s data protection authority of unlawfully obtaining user data. Additionally, the Italian authority has stated that ChatGPT lacks a system for verifying users’ age, which could result in minors being exposed to inappropriate content.
Italian data protection authority referred to a data breach on March 20th, which resulted in the exposure of payment details and conversations of multiple users. The regulators in Italy are considering the possibility of imposing a penalty of roughly $22 million, which amounts to 4% of OpenAI’s global yearly revenue.
As a result of privacy concerns, ChatGPT is banned in Italy, and it has become the first nation to do so, On the other hand, OpenAI has intentionally chosen to be unreachable in China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

In recent months, certain companies and organizations, such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., have restricted access to ChatGPT from their local networks. Verizon Communications Inc. cited concerns about potentially losing control over proprietary data as the reason for doing so.
Meanwhile, in January, New York City’s public school system banned the chatbot from its internet networks and school devices due to apprehensions about cheating and negative impacts on learning development.
In India, for upcoming class 10 and 12 board exams a ChatGPT banned has been imposed, an Artificial Intelligence-based tool, as per the directive issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
How has ChatGPT responded to the ban?
After the ChatGPT ban was imposed, Sam Altman, the founder of ChatGPT, expressed his admiration for Italy and stated that the company respects the decision of the Italian government. He mentioned that they have stopped offering ChatGPT in Italy, although they believe they are abiding by all privacy laws. Altman also expressed his fondness for Italy, declaring it as one of his favourite countries, and expressed his desire to visit again in the future.
